By A. Beckstedt (Indiana)
This is a very simple tripod for your small camcorder or camera. I use it with my mino HD series camcorder and it works great especially for off-level surfaces.

This will not be your only tripod because it is so small but it definetly has its uses.

 "Great tripod!" 2009-06-23
By Elizabeth C. Pennington (Baltimore, MD, USA)
This is a great tripod that works well with the Flip Camera. I think it is good for people who want to not always have to hold their camera. Just like a digital picture camera, sometimes you want to put it down and be in the picture!

"Pain in the butt to set the camera angle right on this tripod" 2009-06-14
By Lee Weinstein (Boston, MA)
Though it is quick to attach and detach from the camera, it takes a long time to set your camera at the angle you want it using this tripod. Almost all tripods allow you to attach the camera, set up the legs, and then quickly and precisely point the camera and lock a mechanism at the top of the tripod in place. Not this tripod. To set the angle of the camera on this, you have to pick it up, re-bend the legs a little, put it down again, watch the legs bend slightly under the weight of the camera (even a very light camera like the Flip), pick it up, bend the legs a little more or less, over and over again.

This tripod is teensy and only good for tabletop use. The Flip has a standard threaded screw hole on the bottom, just spend your $ on a regular tripod.

 "Best of the flips" 2009-07-30
By Candace Mike N Elmo (New York United States)
The Flips are the best buy for your money. Often they excel the camcorder and are far more convenient.

I make wedding dVD's and these work great but the UltraHD 120 minute recorder is the best of them all.

We use this on the Mac so we don't have knowledge of it's use on a pC but I am certain it is just as easy.

1. The software--NO CD for the landfill!! ---you plug the flip into the computer and it asks you to install from the computer.

2. you can do basic editing and upload to You Tube from the app.

3.I chose to use the Iphoto/I movie on my Mac. The new ultraHD uses H.264 codec and you can move the video off from the flip and into Iphoto or Imovie without having to convert or needing special codecs.

4.You can use your own software or theirs( theirs is very good)

5. The ultraHD is a bit bigger than other flips but compensates WAY above and beyond the call of duty.

a.Replacables batteries as well as it's rechargeables battery.Great for when you run out at a party, you can pop in AA's and film on.

b.It has HDMI out. No More 4.3 on your HDTV.Plug the HDMI into TV and play straight from the flip, 16 by 9 for the whole widesceen viewing!!!

For people like me, this is easy to use , easy to view, easy to carry and more simple than a camcorder of the traditional vein. It is soo easily portable , you can carry in purse or a pocket.

LOVE IT !!!

 "Not enough ZOOM" 2009-07-29
By Jean Demeter (Mendocion, CA USA)
I used this little camera at the beach one day.

The video quality was great.

The audio quality was lacking, only the person holding

the camera could really be heard unless the subject was

very close to the camera.

The Zoom is the problem, there is virtually no zoom and

this means you have to be "on top" of your subject to both

see and hear the movie.

Sorry... it didn't work for me.

 "Great little camcorder!" 2009-07-29
By NYC Baby (Bronx, NY)
After agonizing over which TV to buy for over a year (got the Panasonic G10--awesome!!), I cringed when I began the camcorder shopping process. I wanted HD to go with my new HDTV, but I didn't want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I own a Flip Mino SD, but had been somewhat disappointed with the video it took. When I saw the Flip Ultra HD getting decent reviews here and elsewhere (like CNET), I decided it was worth taking a chance on. I'm glad I did!

My criteria for an HD camcorder was:

1) Under $500.

2) Files that would easily play on my PC and PS3.

3) Good quality videos.

4) Portability.

My verdict:

1) The price on the FLIP is obviously nowhere near $500. But could it actually take decent HD video? Read on!

2) Most video cameras save files in awkward file formats like "MOV". I've read that when you convert these files to MPG, the quality is degraded. 1080p is nice, of course, but can overwhelm an older PC (and even many newer ones). I was so relieved, therefor, when I saw that the FLIP ULTRA HD saves videos as MP4! No problem for my PC! I can easily transfer them to a USB flash drive and the files play on my Playstation 3! (My old Flip Mino saved the files as AVI, which my PS3 couldn't read.)

3) So far, so good. But what about the video quality? The Flip Ultra HD records in 720p (at 30 frames per second). I gave it a good workout, shooting inside my house, on a sunny beach, at the park, and was quite impressed overall. The quality was rather grainy inside the house, but all camcorders struggle with lower light conditions. The colors outside were much better and looked quite good on my plasma. Now, you really have to hold the camera super-steady, as there is no stabilizer at all. Jittery motion, fast pans, walking while filming all look terrible on a 50 inch screen. So hold still!

My main complaint is the 30fps. This introduces some flicker when subjects are running around or waving their arms (i.e. kids). It's like watching an old film strip at times, albeit in HD color. The Aiptek Action HD GVS is the same price as the Flip, and it records in 60fps in 720p. (I would have gotten that but I couldn't find any professional reviews and it doesn't save its files in friendly MP4, so I ruled it out.) So I feel that Flip COULD have possibly given us 60fps, but didn't, so I'm knocking 1 star off. Maybe next year!

4) As for portability, you really can't beat the Flip series. The Ultra is much bulkier than the Mino, but still slips in my pocket and I don't really feel it. It sits comfortably in my hand.

So overall, this is a very decent product at a great price. I feel like I saved a lot of money over other entry-level HD camcorders from Sony or Canon, but have not sacrificed too much in terms of video quality. Good for it!

 "It's almost there ...." 2009-07-29
By A. Cunningham (Arlington VA)
I read a lot about the Flip Mino and almost took the plunge, and finally did with the Ultra HD. It sounded great, and like several other recent reviewers, I really wanted to like it. I finally do, but it's taken a good 10 days, and with little help from Flip support.

Right out of the box, my Ultra HD had what I'm starting to think of as the "usual" charging problems that others describe -- the "charging paused, check battery" message. More concerning, the camera halted all performance in the USB ports on my one-year-old iMac. This disabled the mouse, so I could never upload the software. There is the peculiar design flaw, too, that the camera charges in the face-down position, making it very difficult to see these error messages.

Eventually it dawned on me simply to use AA batteries (an option that drew me to this camera), and the camera has worked just fine ever since.

I had an extensive correspondence with Flip's online support. My advice: skip them entirely and just phone Flip. Online support did get back to me quickly ... with a whole set of detailed questions about my computer which I wish they'd just asked in the first place (I'd already told them the computer model and OS). This might have been a stalling technique, as there then was silence. Then, in response to my prodding, more correspondence where they seemed not to understand the problem and we pretty much started over.

Phone support was amenable to having me send only the battery pack back for an exchange, though I'm not confident that I'll receive a functioning one. And, like online support, they seem puzzled, surprised, and much more focused on fixing their battery pack problem than making a customer happy (i.e., interested to have mine for "research" and so "authorized" me to send it, but had zero interest in giving me a pre-paid label or making it easy for me to return this faulty piece). Like another reviewer, I'm not happy to have spent money to have a bad battery pack, but I also have to pick my battles, and decided to keep the machine since it works fine with the AAs. And maybe I'll get a functioning rechargeable back from Flip.

And it's a great little camera! Footage is sharp and the sound is crisp. It uploads easily to the Mac. Very portable and sturdy. Really, I love the camera, and had it worked out of the box I would be posting a five-star rave. Also on the plus side, really, is the phone support -- they do have it, they answer the phone, and they do respond. So, they are ahead of some other products on that score!

So I hope they do fix this glitch and also develop some online customer-friendliness.

"Flip Ultra HD - Disappointing" 2009-07-28
By Macgreiner (St Louis Park, MN)
I wanted to love this product with everything I had. Small, lightweight, affordable, HD - what more could you ask for. But I find that I can't.

I am considering whether to try a third time or not. My first Flip Ultra HD exhibited charging problems from the first time I set it up. I then confronted the permission problem with FlipShare not allowing me to update the firmware. After about half a dozen emails with support - I gave up and returned it to Amazon.

Flip Ultra HD #2 finds me in the same boat. Error when trying to upgrade the firmware. The battery suffers intermittent charging problems again with a cycling:

"Check battery pack: Charging paused"

Another 6 emails to support. I'm sure they have a computer algorithm spitting out standard template answers. On 3 separate issues I received the same support response.

When I use normal AA batteries, the camera works grFlip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes (Black)eat, but I didn't pay near $200 for the device not to work properly.

Ultra HD camera - 9/10

Ultra HD battery - 1/10

So small and handy--I keep this in my purse. You will want to buy a case if you do this. Easy to download videos and post online. Quality isn't professional, so you will still want to use your real video camera for important events. Captures sound quite well and has a bit of zoom capability--not alot. Battery life is good.

By Armando Aguilar Pombo (USA)
I loved the camera while it worked. Then, after recharging it overnight, I was never able to turn it on overnight. I checked the web site and it seems this occurs quite often. I followed the suggestions and nothing worked. I contacted their support department and since it had been more than 90 days since I bought it they declined any kind of warranty or support. There are other options like the Kodak Zi6 out there with much better support. In the end, $200 off to the trash can.

This product works as advertised. It is easy to take videos and transfer them to the computer. The battery last along time and you would be surprised with how many videos you can record in one hour. The software also does a good job. However, some times it is had to edit videos that are a few minutes long. It is great to record very short video for YouTube, that is it.

 "Flip was a Flop" 2009-07-13
By Margaret Kardos (connecticut)
This camera worked for less than 6 months. It froze and when I contacted Flip support they suggested I reset it and leave it charging for up to 12 hours. I followed their directions and not only did the camera remain dead, but it ruined my computer as well. Computer crashed and diagnostics said it was the result of a bad peripheral. The Flip was the only thing I had plugged in. Tech support will not fix the camera because the warranty is only for 90 days. Fortunately I have a good warranty on my computer because basically the whole internal system has to be replaced. To summarize, if you want to spend close to $200 for a camera that has a 90 day warranty, then go ahead, but I say the flip is nothing but an expensive flop. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!

 "Flip Mino HD" 2009-07-15
By Carole R. Holden (Western Md. USA)
This is my first camcorder, recommended by an internet mentor, and I have used it for my first two attempts at videos for social media purposes (e.g., my blog, FaceBook, YouTube, etc.). So far I am far from adept and have not published my attempts, but the gadget is easy to use, compact to carry, and appears to produce good quality. My only problem so far has been creating a video that will not stop and start intermittently when I send it to myself (to test) via email. Flip Support has been quite attentive and tried to help me solve this problem, diagnosing it as not having the full 1GB of ram on my desktop (I have .99 GB). They have suggested I use a special link, found in the Flip software, to send my videos, have them compacted, and thus be able to send good copies. Haven't tried it yet. The only physical problem - and it's minor - is that when plugging the camcorder into the computer, desktop or laptop, it hangs at an angle and thus must be supported (with a book for my desktop). But overall so far I'm satisfied. I use it on a tripod, for steady pictures, and have only tried it in good daylight. Plan to test a few more things when I have time - e.g., indoor-with-lights.

"Really poor Quality Control - you may be lucky though" 2009-07-12
By Robert J. Brown (Australia)
First up - great service from Amazon. I returned 2 of these and was refunded. The first one to be returned had a bad pixel - and also had touch buttons that randomly worked. The astonishingly bad customer service folks at Pure Digital made me jump through hoops and send them multiple files which they claimed they could not read (...tested OK for me on both PCs and Mac when downloaded form THEIR customer support site). In the end they gave me a return authorization -- but tough luck if you are outside the US - they won't accept returns. I hope the Cisco Quality Management team send a rocket up these guys - from other reviews you don't want to have to deal with them. So Amazon did help which is GREAT and sent me a replacement. This one didn't have any bad pixels but was out of focus. Which gave me time to reconsider. The lack of image stabilization is a killer - you absolutely need this on an HD video image -- and iMovie 09 isn't going to save the day. In the end I bought a Lumix ZS3 which has a great lens and great image stabilized HD video. The Mino HD is a cheap toy. Buy Cheap - Pay Twice!

 "MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT- BATTERY PROBLEMS!!" 2009-07-09
By C. Hubbard
When I first received this camera I was thrilled and couldn't wait to take it on vacation with me. While on vacation it needed to be recharged, for the first time. I plugged it into the approved USB wall charger and the camera would not charge, even though it indicated it was. I could not use the camera on the rest of my vacation. When I got home I tried plugging it into my computer. Again, it would not charge. Flip did replace the camera but the replacement has the exact same issue. I have now read many reviews that indicate I am NOT the only one who has this issue. It is a major, major problem and Flip does not seem to be working on correcting this issue at all. A major disappointment.

Review-Why buy a Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder ?

And 'certainly a factor, fresh goes hand in hand with the Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder. It has all the media, and even with Oprah on her live show. Be Cool, but good enough? How does Flip Video make when it comes time. I wonder what is the good that can really only a camera that costs $ 100 to $ 150? There must be a catch right?

Before buying a Flip Video and  UltrSerie a camcorder, there are a couple of things. The video quality is not so great. This is essentially the same high-quality video on YouTube and thousands of other video sites for 2 minutes. Pan and zoom should be kept to a minimum with the flip video camera, as the battle for the clarity of the images by these movements.

Ease of use is a derStärke with the flip video. Basically we are a big-red Record button, and a few more to check and rimpeople-. Pure Digital The promotional video in all its cutesy cartoon style is a video recording as simple as peanut butter and jelly sandwich. For most people it will be easier. Simply recording (big red button) to USB (CAP), as amended (including software) and sharing (including software, e-Mailan friends and loads of blogs or social networking sites).

Of course, if sibisogno a computer to do something, it is easier than  never. It was not the dreaded "blue screen of death" I would like to make a PB & J sandwich, there were numerous reports of problems with the software and video files with the slow roll video with Apple Mac and PC. You have to producers (Pure Digital) loans, but, but, since the software and firmware upgrade as soon as possible. While the adjustment to the most recent updates, you should be fine. PensareAssicurarsi to keep peanut butter in your USB port clear;)

Best característicastura on this camera is fun. Of course, it can not replace the special HD camera to take high-quality video, but also in other areas. You can VoVideo ltear everywhere. The Ihreein fits comfortably in your pocket, purse or backpack. For events and spontaneously improvised whip is simply wonderful and very few sincere clip. YouTube and Facebook fans will love it for just that reason.

"Easy to Use Except Record Start Issues" 2009-07-22

The product is easy to use, has good video quality, but when the record button is selected, it may have record start issues.

Several times we turned the device on and selected the record button and the device would not respond to anything except the power off. We missed two speaches our daughter gave because of this challenge.

If you get the device, it will be helpful to practice starting, stopping, and recording video. I've checked with other owners and they have had the same issue.

"Flip UltraHD is even better than advertised" 2009-07-21

By Judd R. Zillioux (CA)

Awesome videos, it even zooms, quick to start, excellent FlipShare application, mini-HDMI works great on an HD TV (cable sold separately), USB charges from laptop, PC or optional A/C charger which is the fastest way to charge. And you can use 2 AA batteries to replace the rechargeable pack if you run it down and don't want to take the time to recharge (must be recharged in the Flip). Holds 2 hours of video or 8GB and we haven't run the battery pack dead yet even though we bought a spare. FlipShare 4.1 easy to install; be sure to get the 4.5 update from the web site since it offers more and improved features than the included 4.1. Small size, great videos, great sound, and real cool software.

"Vado HD Versus Mino HD and Flip HD (and Kodak)" 2009-07-20

By Greg Raaum (Austin, TX)

Quit looking at the other products. The one to buy is the Vado HD, not Flip, Mino, or the Kodak one. It's really the only one at this price, with this functionality, it truly blows away the competition. We have tested 4 camera models, Flip HD, Mino HD, and Kodak's late entry and on a seven category test, Creative Vado HD bested the competition by a margin so high, it's not really a competitor to anything.

In our final rankings (and this is internal), the Vado HD received 9 out of 10 points, Flip and Mino received 7 and 5 respectively. The Kodak received a 6, but only because it's waterproof. Hopefully the 2 other manufacturers will look into creating a better product, rather than a more attractive product.
