My daughter's Flip Ultra started to freeze in the "Flip" splash screen when turned on. I contacted Flip Video Support at Pure Digital Technologies. Here was their response:
"Thank you for your continued patience as we work to resolve your issue. Pure Digital warrants Flip Video camcorders for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase. As you are beyond the warranty period and our troubleshooting efforts have not allowed us to regain power on your camcorder, nor is your camcorder recognized by any computers, we are unable to further offer or suggest any means by which we can repair the camcorder or retrieve the videos; and our warranty policy does not allow for replacement of the camcorder after the 90 day warranty period. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
Wow! I knew it was out of warranty...But I expected that there was SOME way to have it repaired. Now we've got a nice little paperweight!
These things were once pretty unique, but now there are many alternatives. Beware of Flip!

Let me just say up-front that this Flip camcorder is enormous fun, and has proved itself capable of taking some great video under challenging circumstances. Just about the only thing that stopped me giving it five stars is its capacity for batteries. If you're thinking of buying one of this model Flip, invest in some high-capacity rechargeable batteries, and keep a spare set with you. Other than this minor niggle, it's an excellent product - so much so, I'm planning to buy one each for my children for Christmas!

I bought this as a high school graduation present for my 18 year old brother. I gave it to him early and he ended up actually using it for one of his final projects.
The camera itself is a really nice size, not too bulky but not incredibly small. The software is easy to use and you don't have to worry about any cables. It's so nice that the USB is built right into the camera so all you have to do is to plug it directly into your computer. That's it!
The quality is pretty good considering the type of camera.
I think that this is a great gift for teenagers. I got the 30 minute length because I didn't think he'd need a longer alotment because usually if he's taping something, he'll have the laptop to download it to right then and there, so he wouldn't really NEED the bigger camcorder.
Overall, a great buy.

I had 2 of these fail. The first one was replaced under warranty. The 2nd one which had the exact same problem (wouldn't power on) was out of warranty. All this happened between 4/08 and 6/09. I was told that they are not repairable and there was nothing they could do for me. No offer of a special replacement price or anything. They act like they have a repair service.....they don't. If it fails within 6 months you will get a replacement. After that you are out of luck.

While not nearly in the ballpark of more elaborate (and expensive) camcorders, this little pocket-size device is quite serviceable. The flip is easy to use and the resolution is actually better than one might think. Downloading clips is quite easy through the use of the built in USB, although I would suggest using an extension cable rather than trying to directly connect the device to a PC. Have used the flip at baseball games and at an Air and Water show. The clips have turned out well, although I would suggest using it for close up type recording. The zoom feature is limited, but using it to film family and friends has turned out very well. The battery life is actually longer than one might think and starting and stopping recording could not be easily. So, overall a very good device for recording events that are in close proximity with ease of use being a strong point.
